Pay rise for workers in the disability sector

The Gillard Government announced today that they were prepared to provide over $2 billion dollars to deliver an historic pay rise to workers in the disability and community sector.

Cosmos CEO, Catherine Viney, is seen here congratulating Tim Jacobson of HACSU on the outcome. This is a terrific win for the staff of Cosmos and for all disability and community sector workers. This pay increase is the first time that Fair Work Australia has recognised a pay equity case and well mean that people who want to stay in the sector can afford to do so.

The pay increase will begin from December 2012, and will be spread over six years. The increase will range from 18 per cent to 35 per cent.

This pay increase will also mean that it is easier for employers to attract and retain staff.

In all it’s a terrific outcome. The elephant in the room on this one though is, will the Tasmanian State Government follow through with more than a moral commitment to the pay increase?

Second Echo Ensemble
‘FULL STEAM’

The station, a platform for imagination. In the waiting, the parting,
the mad rush for our departing train, this is where the romance
of the railway finds its way into our heart. The mind finds the steam
to power our imagination in the moments in between.

On Saturday 20th August family and friends of the ‘The Second Echo Ensemble’ were treated to a ‘sneak peek’ of a new work in progress.

Under the Directorship of Sally Davis, and with some new faces in the ensemble, the piece titled ‘Full Steam’  is planned to be part of a series
on new short pieces hoping to be undertaken by the group in 2012.
All of the short works will then come together as a ‘night of theatre’.
The project is pending funding and each piece will be directed by a well
known Tasmanian performance artist.

The work is themed around a railway station and the human ‘happenings’
and interactions between people in this environment . The development
of the piece is driven largely by the artists and comprises of short group,
duet and solo gestural dance based ‘acts’. There are some beautiful
surprises throughout the work including the introduction of a puppet
that transfixes you and draws you further into the piece.

Congratulations and thank you to all those involved in this next step
in the ensemble’s journey!

Short Break August 2011

Cosmos entered new territory with our first overnight program for our
youngest clients, the 5-11 year olds. The excitement had been building
for some time, with 2 out of the 3 clients about to experience not only
their first slumber party, but also their first night away from their families.

On arrival at the Rosny venue it became evident that any first time
nerves rested solely with Mum and Dad, not the kids who could
not wait to get stuck into the fun and games. And what could be more
fun than a giant ten pin bowling set or a fast paced game of hide and seek? Our imaginations were put to the test as we sought out hiding spots and
tried to be as quiet as mice (not very successfully!) so as not to be found.

Making use of the sunshine we headed out to Bellerive park to sail on our pirate ship. We sailed on the high seas all the way to Buckingham Palace, saving many damsels in distress along the way. When stormy weather headed our way we retreated back to the shore to cook up some colourful (and yummy!) cupcakes for afternoon tea.

Our chef skills were on show when we whipped up some sausage rolls
and homemade chips for dinner. These went down a treat. With full bellies,
we rolled out our mattresses, set up our beds and put on our pjs.
We started watching a movie, but given our big day, didn’t quite make it
to the end before eyes started closing and heads were hitting the pillows.

After a peaceful night, it was time to pack away all our gear and put
together scrapbooks of photos of our weekend. When families arrived
and it was time to go home, the scrapbooks were a great way of sharing
our adventures with them. Parents were pleased (and relieved) to hear
what a fun and fabulous time we all had, and the kids couldn’t wait to
do it all again!
